GENERAL GAMEPLAY
-
Players: Two teams of three players compete on a half-court with one basket.
-
Start of play: Possession is determined by a coin toss before the game starts. The winner can choose to take the ball at the beginning of the game.
-
Checking the ball: Play begins with a "check"—an exchange of the ball between a defensive and offensive player behind the arc at the top of the court as close to the half court line as possible. This is also how play restarts after any dead-ball situation.
-
Continuous play: After a made basket, the scoring team "keeps the ball. game continues immediately. The scoring team keeps possession and must dribble or pass the ball back behind the arc before attempting another shot. The defense cannot play for the ball in the "no-charge semi-circle" under the basket during this transition.
-
Clearing the ball: On defensive rebounds or steals, the ball must be taken back behind the arc before a shot can be attempted. This can be done by dribbling or passing.
Scoring
-
Scoring inside the arc: A basket scored from inside the three-point line is worth one point.
-
Scoring outside the arc: A basket scored from behind the arc is worth two points.
-
Free throws: Free throws are worth one point each.
Time and winning
-
Game length: The game lasts for one 12 minute period. The game clock is stopped during dead balls and free throws.
-
Winning the game: The game ends if a team reaches 21 points at any time, or if the 12 minute period expires and one team has a higher score.
-
Overtime: If the score is tied at the end of 15 minutes, the game goes into an untimed overtime. The first team to score two points wins.
Violations and fouls
-
Shot clock: In official 3x3, there is a 12-second shot clock. If a court lacks a shot clock, a referee or players may count to ensure active play.
-
Players may call their own fouls. If theirs a disagreement they can shoot for the call. If basket is made offense keeps the ball if missed opposing team gets the ball.
-
3-second rule: The traditional 3-second rule applies, preventing offensive players from remaining in the paint for more than three consecutive seconds.
-
Possession on fouls: In casual games, the offended team may just get possession of the ball. In official FIBA rules, the outcome depends on the number of team fouls and the type of foul.
-
Held balls: In official 3x3, held balls (or jump ball situations) are awarded to the defensive team. In casual play, alternating possession may be used.
Other rules
-
Substitutions: Substitutions can be made by either team after the ball is dead, and players must tag hands to make the substitution official.
-
Possession: A coin toss can decide who gets the ball first.
-
After a basket: The non-scoring team gets possession and must take the ball back behind the arc before attempting a shot.
-
After a steal or rebound: The defensive team that gains possession must dribble or pass the ball back behind the arc before taking a shot.
-
Check-ball: Play starts or restarts with a check-ball behind the arc.
-
Tournament Setup and Cash Prize
-
Bracket format: A single-elimination bracket is the standard for tournaments like this, as it is simple and fast-paced. Each team plays one game per round, with the winner advancing and the loser being eliminated.
-
Advancing: The winning team from each game moves on to the next round of the bracket. The bracket structure ensures that the number of teams is halved each round until only two teams are left for the final championship game. For example, in a 16-team tournament, Round 1 would have 8 games. The 8 winners would move on to the Quarterfinals (4 games), then the Semifinals (2 games), and finally, the Championship (1 game).
-
Cash prize: Legally, you can offer a cash prize as long as it is not tied directly to the number of entrants (e.g., "$10 per entry goes into the pot"). Instead, you should advertise a set, guaranteed cash prize for the winning team, or split it between the top finishers.
-
Each team must have matching jerseys with a team name on front and a players number on the back. A person name is optional.
Do's and Don'ts for Players
Do's:
-
Respect the competition: Show good sportsmanship to your opponents.
-
Keep the game flowing: The constant change of possession keeps the game exciting.
-
Communicate with your team: Talk on defense and offense to execute plays.
Don'ts:
-
Don't talk trash excessively: Light-hearted banter is fine, but keep it respectful.
-
Don't argue calls for too long: If there's a disagreement on a foul, a quick resolution is key to keeping the tournament fun. However, Referee call is final.
-
Don't bring ringers: Ensure teams are fairly matched.
-
Don't stall the game: Keep the offense moving to create more scoring opportunities for everyone.
